SF school principal to be arraigned Tuesday on DUI, hit-and-run charges

 A San Francisco school principal arrested earlier this month on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run near the Golden Gate Bridge is set to make her initial appearance in court Tuesday, a district attorney's office spokesman said.

Sheila Sammon Milosky, the principal at Paul Revere School in the city's Bernal Heights neighborhood, was arrested on May 12 just south of the bridge on Highway 101, district attorney's office spokesman Alex Bastian said.

Milosky is set to be arraigned Tuesday morning on misdemeanor DUI and hit-and-run charges, Bastian said.

She allegedly struck two cars and then tried to drive away. She was found and arrested and allegedly had a blood-alcohol content above .08, according to Bastian.

Milosky's attorney, Sam Ware, did not respond to requests for comment on the case.

Milosky previously drew criticism at Paul Revere School, which teaches pre-kindergarten to eighth grade students, for what some parents said were unfair regulations on campus.

The group Alliance of Californians for Economic Empowerment, which advocates for low-income and immigrant families, held a rally last October over rules instituted by Milosky that they said included demerits for students taking bathroom trips and prevented parents from volunteering at the school.

The group alleged that the moves were an attempt to get low-performing students to attend another school so Paul Revere's test scores improve.

School district officials defended Milosky, who is in her second year at the school, saying that all complaints made by parents had been thoroughly investigated.

Army soldier from Salinas killed in Afghanistan

A U.S. Army soldier from Salinas died over the weekend in an attack in Afghanistan, U.S. Department of Defense officials announced Monday.

Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, died on Saturday in the country's Kandahar province, where enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, defense officials said.

Hernandez had been assigned to the 4th Battlaion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

Hernandez's Facebook profile says he attended Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas and graduated in 2008.

Police arrest suspect in Salinas hit-and-run

Salinas police have arrested Jose Cordova, 20, in connection with a hit-and-run that seriously injured a 14-year-old girl on Sunday.

At 8:40 p.m. on Sunday police responded to reports that a white compact sedan had hit a pedestrian in the crosswalk of North Main Street and Bernal Drive and then left the scene, police said.

Cordova was arrested Monday after he admitted to hitting the 14-year-old girl and fleeing the scene, police said.

The girl suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Bay Area trauma center for treatment. Updates about her condition were not available from police this afternoon.

Officers arrested Cordova after a witness reported seeing him driving a visibly damaged, four-door Mitsubishi Mirage in the 300 block of California Street, police said.

The vehicle driven by Cordova belonged to the suspect's cousin who had reported it stolen at Cordova's request after Cordova called her and said he had been involved in a collision, according to police.

The witness reportedly noticed the vehicle because of obvious damage to its hood, windshield and back window, police said.
